These little packages of joy are always in the frozen food section of my local supermarket. While the pre-made stuff is always there for me in a hurry (you know, when your friends are coming over to dinner at six and you're still wearing your dressing gown?) I've always wondered, Can I make them myself?

Yes. This would be a very disappointing recipe post, if it were not true. Now you can, too! I thought that the wonton papers would be too delicate to handle with my brute strength. It turns out that it is very easy to use. It's great that I can make them over and over without ever getting bored -- that is the mark of a go-to appetizer.

Is this fried wonton healthy?

If you want to use an oil that has a high smoking point, you can choose from avocado oil, canola oil or coconut oil. OR, if you can afford it, you can use an air-fryer. Don't forget the dipping sauce. Choose a low sodium soy sauce, or a ginger sesame mixture with rice vinegar.

Ingredients

Although I have listed prawns, you can substitute any protein of your choice.

  • Half lb. prawns shelled, deveined
  • 10 Pieces of Wonton Wrappers
  • 1 tsp ginger, minced
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tbsp chopped coriander
  • White sesame seeds, 1/2 tsp
  • 1 tbsp of sesame seed oil
  • 1/2 tbsp soy sauce
  • Half a teaspoon cornstarch
  • Black pepper pinch
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instrucciones

Prep

Mix the garlic, ginger and sesame oil with the chopped shrimp. Mix well.

Assemble

Place the wonton wrappings on a flat surface. Spoon a teaspoonful of filling into the center of each wrapper.

Brush

Brush the edges of the paper with water to form a triangular shape.

Fry

In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil to 350degF. Drop the wontons into the hot oil in batches and fry them until they are golden brown. To remove the excess oil, place the wontons onto a paper towel.

Serve the wontons of prawns with a dip or sauce of your choosing.

Variations

  • Use another protein in place of the prawn. You can use meats that cook quickly, such as scallops or seabass.
  • Use extra virgin olive oil if you do not have sesame seed oil.
  • You can also use oyster sauce instead of soy sauce.

Can you make the wrappers yourself?

Although you can, I wouldn't recommend it. They are available in stores, either frozen or fresh. It can take a lot of time and money to make them yourself.

What is a Wonton Wrapper?

Wonton wrappers are from Northern China. Dumplings are very similar, but they're thinner and more delicate. Wontons are squared, while dumplings are rounded. They come in a variety shapes, with different flavors and fillings.

How to store fried wontons

Let the wontons completely cool. They can be stored in an airtight bag or container. You can use a piece of paper to absorb excess moisture or oil. The food should be kept in the refrigerator for up to four days. Reheat in an oven at 350degF or until they are heated. It is not recommended to freeze wontons, as they will become soggy when thawed.
